With Racing Victoria looking to share some of the three-year-old major racing news with Sydney’s famed $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in September, the Melbourne Racing Club are building their own super race. In 2014, the Blue Sapphire Stakes was upgraded to Listed status, reflecting the race’s rapidly growing prestige.

The Blue Sapphire Stakes ran in 2012 for the first time as a non-black type status race on Caulfield Guineas Day over 1200-metres.

Open only to three-year-olds the Blue Sapphire Stakes is also known as the Blue Sapphire Classic and offers a lucrative total prize pool of $250,000.

The feature race at the meeting where the Blue Sapphire Stakes will run this spring is the $150,000 Group 3 Ladies Day Vase (1600m).

The race name ‘Blue Sapphire Stakes’ is not unique or new.

There was a previous Blue Sapphire Stakes, which was a Listed race also run over 1200m at Caulfield in early May each year, the most famous winner of which was the mighty Black Caviar in 2009.

By the 2013 Blue Sapphire Stakes the MRC were hoping the race will be elevated to a Listed feature with the long term goal of it running as a Group 1 feature.

This is a similar race history to the Golden Rose which first ran in 2003 as a non-stakes race before gaining its current elite level status in 2009.

Blue Sapphire Stakes Field

A capacity 16 horses will make up the Blue Sapphire Stakes field.

Nominations for the race are due to be taken a month before race day with early entries closing in the second week of September.

Acceptances revealing the Blue Sapphire Stakes final field will then be released a few days before the race.

It is expected that the horses in the Blue Sapphire Stakes field could use the race as a lead-up heading towards some of the more lucrative sprints of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival such as the $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day three weeks later.

The Blue Sapphire Stakes field is also likely to feature many of the same horses that first run in the prestigious Golden Rose in Sydney the month before.
