Black Vanquish Primed for 2015 Blue Sapphire Stakes

October 13th, 2015

Black Vanquish is considered an outsider for success in Wednesday’s 2015 Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, however jockey Patrick Moloney is confident the three-year-old is ready for a big performance and capable of success.

No stranger to the saddle of the talented Tom Hughes-trained colt, Moloney partnered Black Vanquish to a resounding two-length success in only his second competitive start; the Starlight Children’s Foundation Handicap (1200m) on April 11th, and was unlucky not to take the ride on the three-year-old first-up in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) through suspension.

Having left as a leading contender in the Danehill Stakes and only managing seventh behind fellow Blue Sapphire Stakes acceptor Kinglike, Maloney did not think much when right for the Lonhro colt last time and is confident is his capable of a return to winning form on Wednesday.

“So he was pretty much clogged up so he sort of choked down,” Moloney told AAP.

“I’ve trialled him since and he’s trialled really well. He’s fresh and well and I’m looking forward to riding him.

“The last two times I’ve missed out through suspension and I finally get back on him.

“He drawn well and should get a nice sit off them, hopefully.

“And hopefully we see the real Black Vanquish.”

Maloney believes the colt will take plenty of benefit from his run in the 2015 Blue Sapphire Stakes, regardless of the result.

“Hopefully he can turn around from his first-up performance and I think he can,” he said.

“But I think he’ll take good benefit because I think he’s still got a lot of improvement in him.

“He’s a nice horse, but he still has to take that next step.”

Having failed to figure when eleventh in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) on debuting in February, Black Vanquish returned to the paddock after taking out the Listed Thoroughbred Club Cup (1200m) on May 2nd.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2015 Blue Sapphire Stakes odds, for which Black Vanquish can be taken at a quote of $18 for success.
