October 12th, 2016

Flying Artie has returned to racing in this best way possible at Caulfield this afternoon; producing a smart turn of foot to win the 2016 Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m).

Flying Artie was backed into clear favouritism in 2016 Blue Diamond Stakes betting markets at in the hours leading up to jump, and did his chances of success no harm when jumping well and taking an ideal position on the heels of Dalradian.

Settling into a good rhythm and experiencing a good run in transit, the Artie Schiller colt was offered a clear racing line upon arriving at the final straight and locked in a fierce sprint battle with Dalradian.

While doing plenty wrong, the three-year-old’s class counted for everything and he found the line a comfortable length in the clear; Derryn boxing on for third.

Trainer Mick Price conceded that Flying Artie was not at his best despite winning the Blue Sapphire Stakes 2016, but believes the horse will take plenty of benefit from run leading into the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) in just over a fortnight.

“I thought he did a lot wrong,” Price said.

“He got to 100m out and he thought that was it and clocked off. He took a bit of riding and I’, glad I ran him, because he raced like a horse that needs racing.

“Obviously there’s only eighteen days until the Coolmore, which is the race we need to win with him.

“Today will help – he hasn’t been to the races for a long time and his trials have been here. I just thought he raced really green there.

“The first thing I’ll be doing his allowing him as much time as he needs to bounce back and get over it. The run will do him good fitness-wise.”

Jockey Damien Oliver was arguably the difference in success this afternoon, and the veteran hoop also believes he will improve into the Coolmore Stud Stakes.

“He was a little bit underdone coming into today and I think that when he got to the front, he thought the job was done a bit,”

“I’m sure he’s going to really come on from that. He’s going to have to improve with the good Sydney colts Astern and Star Turn here the other day, but we think he’s got nice improvement in him.

“He was right with them in the autumn so I think that with natural improvement, he’s going to be right in that race.”

In being crowned the 2016 Blue Sapphire Stakes winner, Flying Artie has now posted an impressive two wins and three minors through only five career starts.
